Looking to spend a day outside of the city?
These day trips are about an hour west of Tallinn.
The crystal clear waters of Rummu Quarry have become a popular draw for adventurous travelers. In the summer, you can spend the day there swimming or rent SUP boards to paddle around the lake. Divers can explore submerged buildings and an underwater forest. Outfitters offer lit-up raft trips at night and guided tours through a nearby abandoned prison.
Northwestern Estonia's coastline is dotted with interesting destinations. Vääna-Jõesuu Beach, Laulasmaa Beach, and Kakumäe Beach are beautiful sandy beaches for swimming and strolling. Suurupi and Pakri Lighthouses are both over a hundred years old and stand on the edge of cliffs, looking out over the Baltic Sea. Keila Waterfall is also particularly attractive during autumn when the forest is a riot of red, orange, yellow, and brown.
For a dose of culture, check out the Amandus Adamson Studio Museum in Paldiski, the Arvo Pärt Centre in Laulasmaa, and the Harju County Museum housed in the former Keila Manor.

Day trips from Tallinn to nearby islands
If you don't have time for a trip to Saaremaa, spend a day exploring one of the small islands of the coast of Tallinn.
Aegna, Naissaar, and Prangli all have regular ferries. Pack a picnic and spend the day hiking, biking, and swimming, or organize a guided tour to learn more about fascinating island history.
Prangli Travel also offers regular trips to the tiny islands of Rammu, Aksi, and Keri, as well as seal-watching trips near the Malusi Archipelago.

Estonia has over 2,000 islands, but these three are easy to explore on a day trip from Tallinn.
Wintertime day trips from Tallinn
Central Estonia is a great region to explore in snowy weather. You can enjoy outdoor activities, such as snowshoeing, sledding, and both downhill and cross-country skiing.
There are several off-the-beaten-path museums worth visiting, including the A.H. Tammsaare Museum and the Dairy Museum. You can learn more about history at Põltsamaa Castle and the Wittenstein Activity Museum in Paide. And kids will adore the animals at Metsakuurort Animal Park and Wile Alpaca Farm!

Cities to explore
A day trip will give you a taste; stay longer for a deeper, more sustainable experience.
Add these cities to your trip to Estonia. Make it eco-friendly by taking the bus or train, as driving really won't save you much time. Haapsalu and Pärnu are both under two hours from Tallinn, and the buses that serve the routes are comfortable. They usually have an onboard toilet, reclining seats, and a seatback entertainment system. Viljandi is about two hours by train from Tallinn; Tartu and Narva about 2.5 hours away. The good thing about these cities is their compact size. It's easy to explore on foot and shrink your carbon footprint even more.
If you decide to stay longer, then you can use these cities as bases for exploring the surrounding area. Go hiking, climb observation towers, and let Estonian nature help you to de-stress.
Tour Estonia's islands
Direct flights connect Tallinn with Kärdla on Hiiumaa and Kuressaare on Saaremaa.
But Estonia's islands are best enjoyed slowly. Time seems to move at a different pace once you leave the mainland. It's not just about ticking off the landmarks on a list; it's about finding experiences to engage all five senses. Savor meals made with love and local ingredients, sit on the sand and listen to the waves and the wind, or climb to the top of a lighthouse and look out to sea.
