Viljandi's strawberries
As we walk through the streets of Viljandi, large concrete strawberries in cheerful colors stand out. These are not casual urban sculptures; they are inspired by Paul Kondas's most famous painting, “The Strawberry Eaters.” It is one of the most beloved works of Estonian naïve, or outsider, art, which has become part of the urban environment of the city of Viljandi.
These trawberries invite you to notice, search, and discover. The city houses a total of eight concrete strawberries that have become a symbol of the city. Each strawberry takes the visitor closer to Viljandi's creative spirit and art-loving nature.
Paul Kondas's “The Strawberry Eaters” has been selected among the world's 100 most peculiar naïve paintings. The original work can be seen at the Kondas Centre, located in the heart of Viljandi, Estonia's only centre dedicated to naïve art.
