Sculpture of August Maramaa
The sculpture of August Maramaa and his faithful dog Treff tells the story of a mayor whose work shaped Viljandi into the town you know today.
The sculpture next to Viljandi Town Hall, at the beginning of Trepimägi, is dedicated to the legendary mayor August Maramaa. As mayor, he worked to turn Viljandi into a beautiful, green inland resort town where both entrepreneurship and industry could develop. Largely thanks to his efforts, the town gained more greenery and became a pleasant resort town. Maramaa also considered it important to preserve Viljandi’s history and cultural heritage and was one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Viljandi Museum.
Maramaa’s life story also reflects Estonia’s complex history – in 1941 he was arrested by the Soviet authorities and sent to a prison camp.
Sculptor Aili Vahtrapuu's work depicts Maramaa with his dog Treff, which adds a heartfelt, personal dimension to Viljandi's story.
