Kreenholm District and Kreenholm Textile Factory
Narva's Kreenholm District is a town within a city, and the power of nature has shaped its history.
On the Narva River, on an island between two waterfalls, lies the legendary Kreenholm Textile Factory – once the largest textile factory in Europe, whose red brick buildings and English-style architecture tell the story of the industrial era's glory days. The factory complex, which included a hospital, water towers, barracks, and directors' villas, forms a unique, well-preserved ensemble of industrial heritage. In spring and autumn, when water levels are high, water is released through the mill turbines, and the mighty Narva Waterfalls come to life!
Narva Museum organizes regular tours of Kreenholm: "Krenholm: the history of the textile giant" and "Joala factory: from the basement to the tower". Over the space of 90 minutes, you will learn the stories of Narva's industry, nature, and people. Guided tours are held regularly from April to October in Estonian, Russian, and English. Tours can be arranged upon prior reservation during the rest of the year.
Come and discover Kreenholm, the place where quiet walls tell a fascinating story!
