Keila-Joa's hydroelectric power plant
Keila-Joa's hydroelectric power plant is one of Estonia's oldest mill sites, with roots dating back to the 16th century – the first written records date from 1555. The local river, with its powerful waterfall, has offered the opportunity to harness hydropower for centuries, both for grain milling and, later, for industrial use. In 1928, a hydroelectric power plant started operating here, alongside the old mill and fish farming. The power plant was modernized in the 1930s, when a new water intake channel was built, and auxiliary buildings were added for fish farming. In the late 1950s, another major addition was made, enhancing the entire industrial complex.
Today, it is a rare monument that tells the story of both local industrial history and the history of the Keila-Joa manor complex. Although the power plant and mill are not open for interior visits, they can be admired from the outside, allowing you to enjoy one of Estonia's most remarkable historic industrial heritage sites.
