Exhibition "On the Path to Light. Hermann Talvik 120"

This exhibition celebrates the 120th anniversary of Hermann Talvik (1906−1984), one of the most charismatic and distinctive creators in Estonian art history. Born in Tallinn, with Hiiumaa descent on his mother's side and Saaremaa descent on his father's side, Hermann (also Herman) Talvik studied art in Estonia, Finland, and Paris, and lived and worked in Sweden after World War II. He is one of the greatest philosophical mystics and visionaries in Estonian art. His work, characterized by ecstatic-religious sensibility based on deeply personal spiritual experience, holds a unique place in Estonian art history.

Hermann Talvik's works are like endless narratives that, on one hand, provide recognizable references to Christian iconography, while on the other, they dive into spiritual depths and heights within the artist's personal symbol system. His world is full of tensions, prophetic parables, and ambivalence.

The exhibition was created in close collaboration with the artist's daughter, Liina Talvik, who has dedicated herself to collecting Hermann Talvik's works and creating a complete database in Sweden.
