Canoe trip: the fifth season in Soomaa National Park

The fifth season in Soomaa National Park is legendary and unique precisely because it directly affects everyday life. It is the spring flood, when melting snow and ice jams cause rivers to overflow their banks, flooding forests, meadows, and roads. Ordinary landscapes temporarily transform into a water world, where one can only navigate by boat or canoe. Yards, courtyards, and village roads turn into waterways for weeks. The high water can last from a few days to several weeks. For Estonians, the fifth season signifies the transition from winter to spring.

During a 2-3 hour canoe trip, we will visit all the hot spots of the Soomaa high water. We will paddle to Karuskose, the floodplains of the Raudna and Halliste rivers. The trip starts and ends in the Riisa area, depending on the water level.

The main risk during the spring high-water trip is the water temperature. Participants should dress according to the changing weather, bring spare clothes (waterproof packing bags are available from us), and follow the guide's instructions.

We hope to see you in Soomaa for a canoe trip!
