Exhibition “Sailing Forward: How the 1980 Olympic Regatta Shaped Tallinn”
This is the story of how the buildings for the 1980 Tallinn Olympic Regatta made Tallinn a modern city, open to the sea: the Pirita Sailing Centre, the City Hall, the Olümpia Hotel, the main post office, Pirita Road, the TV tower, and the airport terminal were completed. Initially, over 120 buildings were planned, and nearly fifty were completed. Many are still in use today, and several remain at the conceptual level.
Improving the living conditions of locals was also important: Residential buildings, offices, and health institutions were built in the wake of the regatta, designed by Estonian architects, interior designers, and engineers. Attention was paid to the design of urban space, consumer goods, and poster art.
