Struve Geodetic Arc, Simuna endpoint
One point of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Struve Geodetic Arc is located in Simuna, Lääne-Viru county and is marked by a monument established in 1849.
In 1827, under the guidance of Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve, the baseline of Simuna-Võivere was measured.
The measurement is part of the measurement of the meridian arc performed in 1816–1855, the aim of which was to find out the size and shape of the Earth.
The endpoints of the Simuna-Võivere baseline in Simuna and Võivere and the building of the Tartu Observatory have been named UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Estonia.
