Ristna Lighthouse
Ristna Lighthouse, located in the western part of the Kõpu Peninsula, is one of the most distinctive and historically significant structures on Hiiumaa.
The tower was completed in France at the workshop of the famous engineer Gustave Eiffel and was brought to Hiiumaa in parts, where it was then assembled to watch over the sea and guide ships. Ristna Lighthouse was established to support the Kõpu Lighthouse, whose light often remained hidden in the fog – the red light burning here warned sailors of ice and shoals.
The lighthouse's metal structure and neo-Gothic detailing reflect Eiffel's precise and elegant engineering. Over time, the tower has been reinforced with concrete belts, giving it a modern ribbed appearance. Ristna Lighthouse is still operational, and its light shines far across the Baltic Sea, helping ships navigate the shallow waters of Hiiu and the Gulf of Finland.
The lighthouse is open to visitors during the summer season. From the tower, there is a magnificent view over the Kõpu forests and the sea. A small café is open at the foot of the tower.
