The city of Tartu participates in the SmartEnCity project, within the framework of which the khrushchyovkas built in the 1960s are turned into energy-efficient and environmentally friendly apartment buildings – 'Smartovkas'. In addition to the renovation, the buildings have also been given a visually attractive appearance in order to create a unique art-based urban space in the centre of Tartu, making the living environment happier and livelier.
The 'Smartovkas and murals' discovery tour takes you on a journey where you can admire a variety of house-sized works of art, or murals.
Khrushchyovkas were named after Nikita Khrushchev, the first secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU – the head of state.
