Estonian History & Culture
There have been 3 main occupiers in Estonia’s colourful history: Russians, Swedes and Germans.
Swedish History: Often referred to as the Golden Age, the Swedish occupation brought some enlightenment to Estonia, built universities and encouraged cultural and educational development.
German History: In the times of the Hanseatic Guilds, German landlords built luxurious Manor Houses that dot the country still today. Around the first and second world wars Germany left its mark on Estonian hearts and minds - twice occupying the country for shorts spells. The secret Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact meant Estonia was handed back to the Russians after WW2.
Russian History: On and off, before and during the Soviet era, Russia has occupied and influenced Estonia’s culture. The good and the bad is here for all to see from classic Soviet architecture to impressive Orthodox churches and palaces.
Of course Estonia is well known too for its rich medieval history, which is gloriously evident when visiting Tallinn’s Medieval Old Town and other medieval castles and attractions throughout Estonia.
With a long coastline, strategic position in the Baltic Sea and over 1500 islands Estonia’s maritime history is worth investigating too.
